Cushion Design and Making

Take your cushion making skills to the next level with the ability to design and make your own ideas. Choose from piping, fringing, bobble trims, circular cushions, zips and applique and creat your own cushion with our support. You may have a chance to start and possibly complete a second cushion too on the day, either matching or your first or a completely different design.

Date: Cover this course content in any Stitch Classes; make a piped, bobble trimmed/fringed or appliqued zip/envelope back cushion any time from 1st June 2015 in Stitch Classes - Stitch classes booking info here. Bring same ingredients as listed below for the cushion you want to make

Experience: Suitable for those who know how to use a sewing machine and have made at least one item before. For adults and children aged 13+.

Workshop content

Choose a cushion to make using a number of the following skills. You may have time to start a second cushion, depending on the complexity of your project
  • Inserting piping
  • Applique
  • Sewing ruffle edges
  • Inserting bobble trims and fringing
  • Using various zip feet for zips, bobble/fringe trims and piping
  • Inserting a zip on cushion back

What to bring:

  • Ingredients for 2 types of cushion (or enough for 2 the same if you want make a matching pair. Choose from fringed, appliqued or piped cushion (or bring supplies for all 3 if you're not sure yet)
    • For a 16" square piped or ruffle edged cushion with envelope or zip back:
      • 0.5m of non stretch cushion fabric,
      • 2m of 3-5mm diameter piping cord (avail online or at Fabric Land, Brighton)
      • half a meter of non stretch fabric to use for covering the piping (contrast or same fabric as cushion)
      • a reel of matching good quality sewing thread
      • a 16" sq cushion pad (or £4 to buy one from us on the day)
      • Optional: a closed end ordinary zip 2" shorter than the cushion size (ie for a 16" cushion bring 14" zip),
      • if you want to make a larger cushion email us the size after booking - reply to your booking confirmation - and we will advise fabric and trim quamtities needed
    • For a 14 or 16 inch round bobble trim or fringed cushion with envelope or zip back:
      • 16"/40cm diameter round cushion pad (can be bought online eg here)
      • half a metre of non stretch cushion fabric,
      • Optional: a closed end ordinary zip 2" shorter than the cushion size (ie for a 16" cushion bring 14" zip),
      • 2m of bobble trim (avail on Ebay or at Fabric Land, Brighton), or fringing (avail on Ebay or at Fabric Land, Brighton)
      • a reel of matching good quality sewing thread
      • if you want to make a larger cushion email us the size after booking - reply to your booking confirmation - and we will advise fabric and trim quamtities needed
    • For a 16" applique cushion with envelope or zip back:
      • 0.5m of non stretch cushion fabric
      • a 16" sq cushion pad (or £4 to buy one from us on the day)
      • Optional: a closed end ordinary zip 2" shorter than the cushion size (ie for a 16" cushion bring 14" zip),
      • some fabric for the applique design - or get free from our scraps box
      • 25cm bondaweb (available at Fabric Land, Brighton or buy from us on the day for £1)
      • if you want to make a larger cushion or want to do a zip instead of envelope back, email us the dimensions (and whether zip or envelope back is desired) after booking (reply to your booking confirmation) and we will advise fabric and trim quantities needed
  • If you wear glasses for close up work please bring them 

We provide: sewing machine (or bring your own if you prefer), scissors, pins, chalk, tape measure etc if you don’t have your own
