Do you find that dresses often don't quite fit right - on the bust, arms, tummy or hips?

This course all about having a perfect fitting core dress 'block' (template) pattern, whatever your shape or size. It can then can be used as it is to make a simple fitted shift dress after the course, or changed to have different neckline, a full or flared skirt, sleeved or sleeveless styles. 
In fact pretty much any woven fabric dress you can think of can be created to fit you first time from this pattern!

Length of course: There will be just 4 people on this course as there is a lot of fitting involved. It's over 6 x 2h45min long sessions plus homework of 1-3 hours a week depending on sewing speed and experience. Or you could book some of our weekly sewing and dressmaking classes to attend in between the sessions if you need extra support/a machine

Course Dates and Other Options: 

  • Spring 2017 course will be over 6 Monday evenings + homework

  • Complete this course in 7-10 Stitch Classes (choose Kat's or Jo's classes, number depends how much homework you do/experience)
  • Complete this course in 8-12 hours of 121 lessons with Kat or Jo (total hours depends how much homework you do/experience)
  • Make a versatile stretch jersey dress instead/as well in any 4-5 Stitch Classes (any teacher)

Experience level: To get the most out of this course or course content, you should have made at least two garments before using a sewing machine. Age 16+.

Course content (content each week can be cont'd for homework):

  • Week 1: Measure up in pairs and mark up patterns to fit with teacher guidance and tips
  • Week 2: Tissue Fitting the pattern in pairs
  • Week 3: Cut out front & back mock up (toile) in calico and sew and start to fit
  • Week 4: Fitting, adjustments back to pattern, cut sleeve
  • Week 5: Sew, final fit, cut facings
  • Week 6: Practise how to adapt the pattern to different designs. Sew facings and hem on course or at home. 
Teas, cordials, water and coffee available throughout the course. Feel free to bring snacks to eat duruing class if needed.  

What to bring:

  • 2m cotton calico for the toile (mock up)
  • 2.6m* of inexpensive nice fabric for second dress - non stretch, medium weight, smooth surface (there may be final tweaks to dress 2 so save your £25 a metre silk for the 3rd dress!!). 
    *if you are using a print fabric that has a repeat design or stripes buy an extra 50cm so we can pattern match it
  • 100m reel of good quality thread that matches the fabric (not the stuff from the bargain bin!)
  • 25cm fusible medium to lightweight interfacing for facings
  • 24" (26" if you are over 5'6" tall) invisible/concealed zip - buy here or here for 26" if can't find locally (Fabric Land sells up to 22" only)
  • A pot of good quality steel dressmaking pins (we sell pots for £3.50..never buy chinese pins online, they are rough and ruin your fabric!)
  • Glasses if you need them for close up work
  • wear the bra you will wear with the finished dress to every class
  • We provide: sewing machine (or bring your own if you prefer), scissors, pins, chalk, tape measure etc if you don’t have your own
  • Plus:
    • Wash and iron your fabric before the class if it has cotton content
    • Wear fitted leggings or thin trousers or tights and a thin-ish vest under your clothes (not too tight though as they act like a corset changing your body shape!) plus the same bra every week. This is so you can measure yourself easily and try the dress on part way through
