Experience: You will need to be quite familiar with (on your own overlocker or our Janome 6234xl's): threading up the machine, changing needles & adjusting tensions.
You can take our Love Your Overlocker workshop to bring yourself up to speed if you have little to no overlocking experience.

Teacher:  Carrie White. As well as teaching Carrie is a dressmaker and costumier and has a permanent postion as a garment production sewing machinist for a local fashion house. In this role she uses overlockers on a daily basis as part of her garment production process - so you could not be in better hands! Reviews from this course with Carrie have been consistently excellent.

Venue: The Sewing Lounge, Hove PLEASE NOTE:  We are on the 3rd floor (no lift) but your teacher can bring your overlocker up the stairs for you - just arrive 15 mins early  (click here for information on venue access if you have a disability or injury)

Workshop content

You'll learn how to do:

  • rolled hems
  • flat locking
  • gathering
  • elastic
  • pintucks
  • blind hemming/flat locking
  • introduction to differential feed
  • overlocking different fabrics (stretch, loose weave, slippery/satiny fabrics)
  • You will need to already know how to thread up your overlocker and use it. This can be learnt (how to thread up, adjust tension, use your overlocker etc) before this workshop in a 121 lesson or our 'Love Your Overlocker' workshop

What to bring:

IMPORTANT: You will need to cut some of your fabric (see which below) roughly into 15 cm square or strip pieces before your class and bring them, along with any left overs you may have. We recommend using a rotary cutter if you want to cut the squares up quickly. You will not have time to cut them during the workshop
  • Fabric:
    • 50 cm firmly woven cotton or poly-cotton fabric like calico or furnishing fabric, doesn't need to be high end quality (cut up into a minimum of 15 cm squares)
    • 50 cm silky/chiffon/floaty/formal wear fabric (cut up into a minimum of 15 cm squares)
    • 50 cm wide elastic (or scraps of elastic)
    • 50 cm ribbon (or scraps of ribbon)
    • 50 cm lace (or scraps of lace)
  • Thread: 3 x 5000 m cones or 3 x 1000 m good quality spools in a light colour (not black, navy blue or bottle green). Buy normal sewing thread or overlocker cones, not thick button thread and not the cheap threads from the basket on the counter at Fabric Land*
  • OPTIONAL: Any items of clothing that have overlocking techniques on them you'd like to ask about eg a type of rolled hem or stitch.
  • Change for parking - please arrive 15 mins early to find a space and put enough in to park all day without feeding the meter - see parking locations below
  • Please bring your overlocker if you have one, plus guide book, pedal and accessories (including the toolkit with tweezers (please mark your name on your tweezers), screwdrivers/allen keys). We will provide you with an overlocker if you don't have one, please contact us here to confirm if you will be bringing an overlocker with you.

*We'll give you full details of what to buy plus local & online places to buy fabric and thread on your booking confirmation.

We provide: Overlocker (or bring your own if you prefer), scissors, pins, chalk, tape measure etc if you don’t have your own

Where to buy fabric: Suggestions of where to buy your fabric locally will be given on your booking confirmation, or to see our list of local fabric shops now click here

Info on covering basic overlocking in Private 121 classes: Carrie can show you how to use your overlocker in a 121 lesson.  You will learn how to neaten raw edges fast to give a professional looking finish to garments & how to sew jersey garments together with it. She can go into detail on how to thread up, adjust tension in these sessions. For prices and booking info for 121's click here
