On this page - two options (with what to bring to class to make them) for 1st projects for absolute beginners to machine sewing or for those returning to sewing and wanting to make an easy refresher item

  Tote Bag With Cotton Tape Straps and optional pockets

Level: Absolute Beginner

Classes needed: Including learning how to use a sewing machine, this project can be completed in:

Which Stitch Classes to attend: Any

Bring:

  • 1 metre length of non stretch, medium weight fabric at least 140cm wide.
  • To add pockets (takes an extra half  class) bring an extra 25cm length of fabric 
  • A reel of thread that’s a colour match to the main colour of the fabric. Or bring 50p to use our thread while in class (colour match not guaranteed)
  • 50p if you are using your own thread, as you'll need a bobbin, which you can keep  
  • 2m x 1inch wide cotton tape or webbing (not ribbon, it’s not strong enough).
  • 50p if you want to trace a copy of the pattern to take away (although the measures are on the downloadable handout - link on booking confirmation, to make your pattern from newspaper/tissue/pattern paper at home)

Note: All fabric needs washing and ironing before class, unless it is 100% polyester or PU/PVC/Olicloth - or the finished item will never be washed. Check fabric content and any washing/ironing instructions when purchasing fabric

Level: Absolute Beginner

Classes needed: 1-3 (depends on level & handle type) including learning to use a sewing machine

Which Stitch Classes to attend:
Book any Stitch classes, a 2-3 hour long 1-2-1 lesson

Bring:

  • 1 metre length of non stretch, medium weight fabric at least 140cm wide.
  • To add pockets (takes an extra half class) bring an extra 25cm length of fabric   
  • A reel of thread that’s a colour match to the main colour of the fabric or 50p to use our thread in class  (colour match not guaranteed)
  • 50p if you are using your own thread, as you'll need a bobbin, which you can keep
  • 50p if you want to trace a copy of the pattern to take away (although the measures are on the downloadable handout - link on booking confirmation, to make your pattern from newspaper/tissue/pattern paper at home)
  • Optional if doing button/hole: a button or 10p to buy a vintage button from us
