How to Customise Your Sewing Patterns

Do you have a few dressmaking patterns which aren’t quite how you want them?

Perhaps you want a different neckline, a flared or gathered skirt instead of straight, wish it sat lower on the hip with a wider waistband, don't want the collar or would like to add one - or maybe a different pocket would improve it?

Date: Not currently running - we can show you how to adapt the design of your patterns in our weekly Sewing and Dressmaking classes, or in our One-to-One lessons at a time that suits you!

Bring along the items listed below. Please email us if you have any questions.

Experience:  To get the most out of this course you should have made at least one garment before from a pattern
You could book sewing classes with us if you want to learn some clothes-sewing skills before the course - click here for info.

Venue: The Sewing Lounge

Workshop content

  • Bringing along patterns (and we will have lots too), discuss as a group the sort of adaptations you would like to be able to make
  • Using reduced size example patterns you will learn all the techniques the group wants to learn - these could include:
    • different pockets on front, back or side
    • lowering a waist or neckline
    • adding gathers or pleats to a neck or waistline
    • making a skirt/trouser more or less flared
    • creating a new neck or waist facing or waistband
    • different collars or cuffs
    • add a wrap front with buttons
    • learn about binding edges
    • adding contrast panels
    • other ideas you may have!
  • Keep your example adaptations from the day to use a reference on your next clothes making projects
  • This is a pattern theory course, no sewing will be done
  • You will be given a 10% code to use to book Stitch Classes after the course, so you could bring along patterns and get further support adapting and making up the garments

What to bring:

  • Any patterns you have that you would be interested in adapting - could be ones you have made or bought
  • Any garments you have that you would like to copy with an adaptation
  • A sketchbook or folder to put your example patterns created on the day in for future reference
  • We provide: paper, pens, scissors, tape, rulers and glue
  • Snacks if you need them - we will provide teas and coffee
Parking - please arrive 15 mins early to find a space - pay for parking until 8pm on Osborne Villas (with new system paybyphone.co.uk, register in advance to save time and stress). Parking is free on George St or in the disabled bays outside Modelo Lounge after 6pm
