What to sew
To get involved you can make a drawstring bag (or as many as you like). Any sizes from 45cm/18" long to 33cm/13" wide or bigger would be welcome! Our free bag we created during lockdown to help the NHS would be suitable - download instructions here. This is a great project to use up any spare fabric you have around.

Where to send your bags
Email Mel at Sussex Volunteer Crafters on [email protected] for more info and to arrange collection of your bag/s. She also has lots of other charity sewing, crochet and knitting projects on the go if you'd like to get involved

Need help with the sewing?
You can also make these in our regular group Stitch! Weekly Open Sewing Sessions if you need a hand on the first one

Migrant English Project Sewing Group

Unleash your creativity to make a difference!

Charity and project info
Migrant English Project Sewing Group - the weekly sewing group in Brighton and Hove is a chance for migrant women to come and learn some basic sewing skills and make their own clothes in a fun, friendly and supportive environment. Women learn how to use a sewing machine, work with paper dress-making patterns, explore different types of fabric, take measurements and follow a step by step garment construction process. The sewing group is a warm and safe space to practice English, learn new skills, share knowledge with others and develop self confidence and resilience.

What you can help with

  • We’re always on the lookout for more volunteers. If you enjoy sewing and can use a machine and paper pattern, do get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.
  • We’re also very grateful for donations of sewing equipment, thread and fabric.
