Workshop content

  • Measuring up accurately to choose right basic pattern
  • Adjusting to fit, moving darts, taking in, adjusting crotch shape etc
  • Putting adjustments back onto and pattern
  • How to draft a facing or waistband & making a working finished pattern
  • Produce a 'wearable toile': a pair of pocketless trousers with side or back zip and waistband or facing
  • How to change the leg shape in future pairs of trousers
  • The main purpose of this course to to give you a great fitting trouser template pattern. If you would like to learn to add pleats, pockets, high waistbands, turnups and any other details please book Stitch Classes, bringing your trouser pattern and we will help you make a new pattern from it with any details you desire. You will be given a 10% code to use to book Stitch Classes after the course

What to bring:

  • Fabric:
    • 1m of soft calico for your first toile which will be just front and back pieces to knee only
    • (buy after class 1) 1.5cm - 3m of 'wearable toile' fabric (will depend on your size and style of trouser you want, so wait until after the first class to buy this) - this a for your final pair of full length trousers with waistband  that you make on the course, which still may need tweaking but if they work out well enough you can still wear them. We recommend waiting until your third pair (that you make after the course or in Stitch Classes) for that super expensive silk or wool fabric!
  • Thread. Buy good quality sewing thread e.g. Coats, Moon, Gutermann, not thick button thread and not cheap 'special offer' threads:
    • One 100m or more reel of contrast thread for toile (so you can see it to upick if needed!)
    • One 100m or more reel of thread matching your wearable toile fabric
    • 50p for each bobbin you use (if using our machine) if you would like to keep it
  • (buy after class 1) Closed end or invisible zip matching your 'wearable toile' fabric and a button if doing waistband
  • 25cm medium weight fusible interfacing for waistband or facing (white if using pale fabric for wearable toile, black if using dark fabric)
  • A put of good quality dressmaking pins (never buy pins from China btw! (We sell nice long pins x144 for £3.50 a box and magnetic pin-cushions for £7 cash in class)
  • Trousers that fit well that you already have, or indeed those that don't - basically bring trousers with you as may be helpful
  • Parking - please arrive 15 mins early to find a space - pay for parking until 8pm on Osborne Villas (with new system paybyphone.co.uk, register in advance to save time and stress) but is free on George St or in the disabled bays outside Modelo Lounge opposite
  • You can bring your own machine or use ours. We are on the third floor so we recommend using ours which are lovely Janome 525s's.

We provide (or bring your own): Scissors, pattern paper, chalk, tape measure etc if you don’t have your own

Where to buy fabric: Suggestions of where to buy your fabric locally will be given on your booking confirmation, or to see our list of local fabric shops now click here
